A plant of the Compositae family, this plant can be identified by its smooth, wide, spread out leaves and bright green colour, with a largely white heart.  Its slightly bitter taste and crunchy leaves make it one of the most appreciated vegetables.

This plant is noted for its high iron content and share of vitamins A and C, with high antioxidant properties.
